Alphabet Stock Drops 1.5% as DeepMind Turnover Deepens 1 min read GOOG Alphabet GOOG , the parent of Google, YouTube and Google Cloud, fell approximately 1.5% in Tuesday's regular session as investors absorbed a shake-up at the heart of Google's AI empire. Demis Hassabis stepped down as Google DeepMind's chief executive while staying on as chairman, according to Investor's Business Daily, while veteran AI scientist Jeff Dean left to start a new venture. That is a lot of movement at the top of Alphabet's most important growth engine. DeepMind is not some side project anymore. It sits right in the middle of Google's battle to dominate the next generation of AI. Koray Kavukcuoglu, Google's chief AI architect, is taking over many of Hassabis's responsibilities and will report directly to Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai. And the timing could hardly be more important. Alphabet just pushed its 2026 capital-spending forecast to $195 billion$205 billion, up from $180 billion$190 billion. At the midpoint, that is another $15 billion going into an already massive AI infrastructure buildout. Alphabet clearly sees demand worth chasing. Google Cloud revenue exploded 82% to $24.8 billion in the second quarter, while the company reported external TPU sales revenue for the first time. The growth is real. So is the spending. Alphabet now has to prove those billions can turn into even bigger revenue and profits. That is where the stock price makes this story much more interesting. Alphabet closed Aug. 11 at $350.52, a whopping 41.52% above the GF Value estimate of $247.68. Investors are not paying for an AI turnaround anymore. They are paying for AI domination. That leaves far less room for leadership disruption, slower Cloud growth or disappointing returns on Alphabet's enormous infrastructure bill. If Google keeps converting AI demand into explosive Cloud growth, the premium may have ammunition. If growth cools while spending stays near $200 billion, valuation could quickly become the problem. Alphabet has the AI firepower. At $350, investors are already paying as if it hits the target. GuruFocus Management US stocks Read more from GuruFocus More news from GuruFocus
