Demis Hassabis hands Google DeepMind’s day-to-day leadership to Koray Kavukcuoglu Appointments 7 Aug Written By Emma Thompson The 13-year DeepMind veteran will oversee Gemini model development, frontier AI research and product teams as Hassabis focuses on AGI, science and Isomorphic Labs Hassabis will focus on AGI, science and Isomorphic Labs while continuing to advise Google DeepMind’s models and research teams. Koray Kavukcuoglu is taking over the day-to-day leadership of Google DeepMind , gaining responsibility for Gemini model development, frontier AI research , the Gemini app and developer teams as co-founder Demis Hassabis moves into a wider strategic role. Kavukcuoglu becomes Senior Vice President of Google DeepMind while continuing as Google’s Chief AI Architect. He will report directly to Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai. Hassabis will become Chair of Google DeepMind and Chief Scientist of Alphabet. He will continue to lead Isomorphic Labs and advise Kavukcuoglu and Google DeepMind’s teams across models and research. The change removes Hassabis from daily operational responsibilities but keeps him closely involved in the organization he co-founded. He will work with Pichai on strategic and global artificial general intelligence matters from Google DeepMind’s Platform 37 offices in London. In a message to employees, Hassabis connects the handover to his belief that AGI is approaching: “I’ve been working towards AGI my whole life and now, like many of you, I feel it is close at hand.” He adds: “With this backdrop, I’ve decided that now is the right time for me to hand over my day-to-day operational responsibilities at GDM, so that I have the time and space to focus on the big picture and help influence what is to come to the best of my ability.” Gemini 4 enters the leadership handover Kavukcuoglu’s promotion is an internal succession. He has spent more than 13 years at DeepMind and is currently its Chief Technology Officer, a position he has held since January 2024. Earlier roles included Vice President of Research, Director of Research and Research Scientist. Pichai credits him with establishing DeepMind’s deep learning team and contributing to work including WaveNet and DQN. Hassabis describes Kavukcuoglu as “one of the world's foremost AI experts” and says responsibility for the Gemini models has already been with him and other leads “for a while.” The employee messages also name Gemini 4 among Google DeepMind’s new models. No release date is provided, although Pichai refers to upcoming model releases and says the organization is seeing progress in areas where it needs to improve. The scale of the operation moving under Kavukcuoglu’s leadership extends beyond model research. Pichai says the Gemini app has passed 950 million monthly users and that Gemma models have exceeded 900 million downloads. He also states that Google DeepMind’s Cyber model is live and that Flash is in high demand. Hassabis will give more attention to Isomorphic Labs as part of his new role. The Google DeepMind co-founder also serves as Founder and CEO of the company, which is focused on drug discovery. “I’ve always believed the No.1 application of AI should be to improve human health,” he states in his employee message, identifying diseases including cancer among the problems he wants AI to help address. Jeff Dean and Sanjay Ghemawat form independent company The leadership changes extend beyond Google DeepMind. Pichai says Jeff Dean and Google Senior Fellow Sanjay Ghemawat are launching an independent public benefit corporation intended to accelerate discoveries in machine learning, science and engineering. Dean has spent 27 years at Google, while Pichai credits both researchers with work spanning the company’s early search infrastructure and the neural networks used in modern AI. The new company is not named in the announcement, and no launch date or investment figure is provided. Google will remain involved as a founding investor and Cloud partner, with plans to collaborate on a research framework for machine learning systems and related infrastructure advances. 11 May 2026 ETIH Innovation Awards 2026 Winners 11 May 2026 Read more → 11 May 2026 13 April 2026 ETIH Innovation Awards 2026 Shortlist 13 April 2026 Read more → 13 April 2026 6 August 2025 About the EdTech Innovation Hub Awards 2026 6 August 2025 Read more → 6 August 2025 7 August 2026 Anthropic names Tino Cuéllar its first Chief Global Affairs Officer 7 August 2026 Read more → 7 August 2026 7 August 2026 Demis Hassabis hands Google DeepMind’s day-to-day leadership to Koray Kavukcuoglu 7 August 2026 Read more → 7 August 2026 7 August 2026 UK AI Security Institute finds AI agents targeted real people during cyber tests 7 August 2026 Read more → 7 August 2026 7 August 2026 England’s vocational reform wins rare teacher backing, but schools face a delivery gap 7 August 2026 Read more → 7 August 2026 7 August 2026 Stanford appoints Tomiko Brown-Nagin to lead Graduate School of Education 7 August 2026 Read more → 7 August 2026 7 August 2026 Google AI fellowship pairs skills training with community-led workshops 7 August 2026 Read more → 7 August 2026 7 August 2026 OpenAI selects 14 research projects to study AI’s effects on work, education and inequality 7 August 2026 Read more → 7 August 2026 6 August 2026 July’s biggest edtech stories: AI safety failures, classroom robots and the race for AI fluency 6 August 2026 Read more → 6 August 2026 6 August 2026 Imperial College London plans AI, economics and policy master’s for 2027 6 August 2026 Read more → 6 August 2026 6 August 2026 AI Societal Impact Lab seeks emerging researchers for first responsible AI fellowship 6 August 2026 Read more → 6 August 2026 6 August 2026 Sheffield researchers secure £235,000 UKRI grant to track AI’s impact on research incentives 6 August 2026 Read more → 6 August 2026 6 August 2026 OpenAI field report finds human verification remains the bottleneck for scientific coding agents 6 August 2026 Read more → 6 August 2026 5 August 2026 OpenAI publishes 10 research advances generated by unreleased Astra model 5 August 2026 Read more → 5 August 2026 5 August 2026 DfE review finds no single support model works for all autistic pupils or those with SEMH needs 5 August 2026 Read more → 5 August 2026 5 August 2026 Google Cloud appoints Simon Shenton to lead UK and Ireland public sector work 5 August 2026 Read more → 5 August 2026 5 August 2026 name.com embeds domain registration in five AI and developer platforms 5 August 2026 Read more → 5 August 2026 5 August 2026 Microsoft Research releases Orchard framework for scalable AI agent training 5 August 2026 Read more → 5 August 2026 4 August 2026 OpenAI adds three education plugins for K–12 teachers, college faculty and students 4 August 2026 Read more → 4 August 2026 4 August 2026 EU AI Act transparency rules take effect for chatbots, deepfakes and AI content 4 August 2026 Read more → 4 August 2026 4 August 2026 Stephen Leicht takes over as Digital Science CEO as Daniel Hook moves to Holtzbrinck Group 4 August 2026 Read more → 4 August 2026 4 August 2026 Harvard builds AI toy to test how artificial intelligence changes children’s play 4 August 2026 Read more → 4 August 2026 4 August 2026 University of Greater Manchester embeds student-designed AI literacy framework in training 4 August 2026 Read more → 4 August 2026 4 August 2026 Smart storage solutions before extended travel 4 August 2026 Read more → 4 August 2026 4 August 2026 Microsoft links AI-augmented CaptiveCrunch campaign to compromised hospitality Wi-Fi 4 August 2026 Read more → 4 August 2026 4 August 2026 Google.org joins $50 million coalition to combat AI-enabled scams 4 August 2026 Read more → 4 August 2026 3 August 2026 OpenAI agrees to independent review of agents’ Hugging Face hacking incident 3 August 2026 Read more → 3 August 2026 3 August 2026 Gates Foundation targets 10 million more US learners earning credentials by 2045 3 August 2026 Read more → 3 August 2026 3 August 2026 NYU faculty selected for three DOE Genesis Mission AI research projects 3 August 2026 Read more → 3 August 2026 3 August 2026 Google Cloud opens $75,000 Agentic Cinema hackathon for Gemini-powered media tools 3 August 2026 Read more → 3 August 2026 3 August 2026 OpenAI cuts GPT-5.6 Luna API prices by 80% and Terra by 20% 3 August 2026 Read more → 3 August 2026 Google DeepMind Google Alphabet Google Alphabet Google Gemini Google Gemini 4 Isomorphic Labs AI AGI Machine Learning Appointments On the move UK Frontier AI Emma Thompson
