FedEx targets cross-border ecommerce challenges with Global Trade Navigator tools

FedEx launched a new set of digital trade tools it designed to help businesses in a dynamic global environment to navigate tariffs, customs requirements and cross-border shipping costs before packages reach international borders.

The carrier designed its new tools, packaged under the name Global Trade Navigator, to enable businesses to look up tariff codes, estimate duties and taxes, and identify potential customs issues earlier in the shipping process, according to FedEx.

The tools, announced Sept. 9, span the full international shipping workflow from pre-shipment planning through customs clearance reporting. They are available to businesses at a range of sizes from small to enterprise scale.

More than 900 of North America’s Top 2000 largest online retailers use FedEx as a shipping carrier, according to Digital Commerce 360 data. Retailers that used FedEx for fulfillment reported a combined $789.51 billion in 2025 ecommerce sales.

How FedEx’s Global Trade Navigator tools work

The suite covers five areas of the international shipping process:

  1. Pre-shipping planning. Free, self-service guidance on estimated duties, taxes, fees, and document recommendations. Businesses do not need a login for this information.
  2. Shipment data. Customers can review product code classifications, customs values, and country of manufacture information.
  3. Checkout cost transparency. Sellers can display duty and tax information to customers through Shopify, providing more transparency into import costs.
  4. Integrate trade insights. Allows businesses to incorporate product classifications, estimated duties and taxes, and regulatory information into existing systems.
  5. Clearance and reporting management. FedEx customers can use these tools to view customs clearances. They can also find out what actions they’re required to take, manage payments and more.

Impact of duties on ecommerce

Retailers have faced complications stemming from changing tariffs — and later refunds — in the U.S. throughout 2025 and 2026. 68% of small and medium-sized businesses report that customers are regularly surprised by duties at delivery, according to FedEx’s 2026 Small Business Trade Index, which surveyed 1,000 small-business decision makers.

“International shipping requires businesses to make complex decisions long before a package begins its journey,” said Jason Brenner, senior vice president of digital portfolio at FedEx, in a written statement. “Building on decades of global trade expertise, Global Trade Navigator makes critical trade information and guidance more accessible to businesses as they grow internationally.”

Ultimately, Brenner pitched Global Trade Navigator as a solution to achieve what he said would be “fewer surprises and a more predictable experience for businesses and consumers.”

FedEx Q4 results

In its fiscal Q4 ended May 31, FedEx reported $25.0 billion in revenue, an increase of 12.6% year over year. For the full fiscal year, the shipping provider’s income grew 7.7% to $94.7 billion.

International export packages from the U.S. grew 5% year over year in Q4, marking the second straight quarter of growth.

Prior to the announcement of the new Global Trade Navigator tools, FedEx executives referred to complications customers faced with international trade in an earnings call.

“We have continued to help our customers navigate a very dynamic and complex environment: the implementation of global trade policy changes, geopolitical unrest in the Middle East, and the IEEPA refund process,” said Brie Carere, chief customer officer at FedEx.
