Global consultation on education in the age of AI © UNESCO/ Weiwei Kang; © UNESCO/ Olivier Marie Last update: 8 September 2026 Many education systems are under pressure to respond appropriately to rapidly changing technologies, often without adequate regulatory frameworks, institutional capacity or shared understanding of risks and opportunities. Ahead of Digital Learning Week 2026 , UNESCO released a discussion paper ‘ Sustaining education as a common good in the age of AI: The case for deliberative governance ’, establishing education as a common good and highlighting six directional shifts through which those purposes are undermined when AI use is ungoverned. The discussion paper lays the normative foundation for a series background papers commissioned by UNESCO on key issues concerning AI governance in education. Each paper addresses the same underlying question: what does it take for an education system to exercise agency in the face of rapid AI diffusion, and to shape and govern these tools and systems in ways that sustain the public purpose of education? Global consultation The release of the papers kicks off a global discussion and consultation on these issues. Between September and November 2026, UNESCO invites experts, academics, government officials and other stakeholders to review the papers and contribute their perspectives on these themes. Contributions may be submitted to: aied@unesco.org . The deadline for comments is on 15 October 2026 . The feedback will feed into the development of a compilation of policy briefs to be released during Digital Learning Week 2027. Policy problem: How should the underlying policy problem be framed? Policy recommendations: What clear, actionable and feasible recommendations should be provided for diverse education contexts? UNESCO principles: How should the police briefs reflect and advance UNESCO’s principles for AI in education, including human agency, equity, inclusion, safety and ethics? Evidence and implementation: What evidence, examples or country experiences could strengthen the analysis and support the feasibility of the proposed recommendations?
