Follow Reuters — Multiple Google Cloud services experienced disruptions in the company’s London region on Tuesday, according to its service status page, while British digital bank Revolut also reported a service outage. “Multiple Google Cloud services are experiencing elevated errors and intermittent network failures in europe-west2 region,” Google said on its website, referring to the London region. The issues began just after 7 a.m. local time, the company said. “We apologize to all who are affected by the disruption,” it added. Shortly after 1 p.m. local time, Google said it was “seeing the recovery of services” across most of the region. The company also said that “power event” had caused the outage in part of the London area. A Google spokesperson said in a statement that the company was investigating the issue. Revolut said on its website that several of its services were partially unavailable, including card payments, topping up balances via bank cards, ATM withdrawals and currency exchange. A person familiar with the matter told Reuters that Revolut’s service outage was related to the Google Cloud service disruption. “We are currently experiencing a service disruption affecting multiple services. We can confirm that all our customers’ money and data are safe,” Revolut said on X. Google said its engineering team was investigating the issue, which impacted the London-based data center. Multiple websites and apps experienced disruptions on Tuesday, including banks HSBC, Barclays and Lloyds Bank, according to Downdetector, a website tracking user reports of service disruptions. But it is not clear whether the Google Cloud outage was behind those issues. Separately, ING Germany said there were problems logging into online banking and its banking app due to a technical issue. The outage “is a reminder of how deeply our economies depend on just a handful of cloud providers,” Feng Li, associate dean for research and innovation at Bayes Business School at City St George’s, University of London. “A problem in one region can interrupt banking, payments and other services well beyond the provider itself.” This story and headline have been updated with additional reporting.
