Indonesia's parliament summons marketplace over frozen vendor funds - ANTARA News

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia’s House of Representatives (DPR RI) met with TikTok and Tokopedia on Tuesday to address frozen funds belonging to micro, small and medium enterprises selling through TikTok Shop, with a follow-up planned next week. Commission VII Deputy Chair Evita Nursanty said several sellers complained on July 2 that TikTok Shop had withheld business balances worth billions of rupiah without clear justification. Nursanty said the hearing sought clarification and a resolution rather than to determine legal liability, as the commission is not a law enforcement agency. She said lawmakers were obligated to hear public complaints and oversee MSME protection and empowerment while ensuring disputes involving digital platforms were handled fairly and transparently. Nursanty acknowledged platforms need safeguards against fraud and abuse but said automated systems should not impose sanctions without adequate explanations and balanced verification. The remainder of the meeting was held behind closed doors. Gekrafs Bekasi City branch head Siska Yofthie said some sellers’ balances had been withheld or appeared to have disappeared from their accounts. She said affected sellers received unclear or fabricated explanations and suffered significant losses because they relied entirely on the platform for their livelihoods. Tokopedia and TikTok Shop Indonesia Executive Director Stephanie Susilo said the company had investigated 217 affected accounts involving about Rp24 billion, or roughly US$1.36 million.Of that amount, Rp16.7 billion, or about US$946,440, was linked to verified fraud. Susilo said temporarily freezing funds was a security measure to protect buyers and sellers, with balances released immediately when sellers are cleared of wrongdoing. The House plans to hold a follow-up meeting next week to monitor progress toward resolving the dispute.
