Iowa takes on Temu in legal battle regarding data security and consumer fraud

Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird filed a lawsuit against a Chinese company that’s essentially that country’s version of Amazon. The lawsuit against Temu claims the online marketplace service is breaking Iowa’s Consumer Fraud Act. It accuses Temu of making bogus claims about the quality of its products, misleading prices, deceiving customers by taking their data and putting it at risk of winding up in possession of the communist Chinese government. Stealing intellectual property and violating privacy rights are also among the allegations. (OurQuadCities.com) The case points to the app being considered malware by security experts. Six other states filed similar lawsuits against Temu and its parent company. This sounds alarms similar to the concerns about tiktok. There were threats to ban it, but it still operates in the United States. What do you think about the merits of this case? Should Temu be banned in the country? Host Jim Niedelman got into the issues with Democratic political consultant Kevin Perkins and Scott County Republican party vice chair Kurt Whalen. “I certainly know the allegations are serious,” Whalen said. “Counterfeit goods, misuse of intellectual property, harvesting personal data.” “It’s always been ‘buyer beware,’ so when you’re downloading all these apps, you’ve got to be aware that you’re releasing a lot of information,” Perkins said. “The most important thing is the data collection and that the parent company is Chinese, so that could be a potential national security issue.” To hear more, click on the video above.
