Sam Altman: AI should empower people, not companies 24.08.2026 - 01:45 Share BGNES OpenAI CEO warns of the danger of artificial intelligence falling under the control of a handful of corporations --> OpenAI CEO Sam Altman says he worries that artificial intelligence could one day be controlled by a handful of companies, models or individuals, leaving most people without a say in how the technology shapes the world, Business Insider reported. “The right way to think about it is that we want people to have deep control over the future,” Altman said on David Senra’s podcast, released on Sunday. “Society and the models will evolve together.” Altman said he was also concerned about the opposite possibility - that artificial intelligence could slip beyond human control. Paradoxically, he argued that fear of this scenario could help bring about the first one. “There are a lot of people who are so nervous about the magnitude of these risks, so consumed by it and feeling the need to protect the world,” he said. “Like, you know, ‘we have to sacrifice a lot of freedom for security’.” Altman was most likely referring to Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei. Amodei has warned in podcasts, essays and posts on the company’s blog about the risks posed by the rapid development of artificial intelligence. In a June essay, he wrote that his company’s new models posed “very real risks” to cybersecurity, the financial sector, critical infrastructure and national security. Amodei has used these warnings to argue for a greater role for governments in regulating AI. In Altman’s view, this could amount to trading freedom for security. Anthropic was also the only major AI company last month not to sign a letter supporting open-weight models, which allow developers to share, download, modify and deploy AI models on their own infrastructure. China has embraced the open-weight approach, allowing it to keep pace with Silicon Valley at a fraction of the cost. Some US companies, including Nvidia, Meta and Microsoft, argue that the United States should do the same or risk losing ground to its rival in the AI race. OpenAI, although it has not released the source code for its frontier models, launched two open-weight models last year - gpt-oss-120b and gpt-oss-20b.
