Square launches agentic commerce integrations with ChatGPT, Claude
Payments provider Square has announced integrations with artificial intelligence (AI) platforms, OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude, to help enable agentic commerce.
The integrations include an app for ChatGPT and a plugin for Claude. Square said they help sellers to “get discovered and transact at the exact moment customers are making purchasing decisions through AI-powered conversations.”
It added that Square helps sellers accept payments where their customers are. The strategy has expanded to reaching customers “across key digital channels, from search and maps to social and marketplaces,” it said. “Square is extending this approach to help businesses show up with accurate information and — in supported AI experiences — directly order within these channels.”
The first merchants to go live in the U.S. are Food & Beverage sellers with active Square Online Ordering profiles. Square said it does not charge additional marketplace commissions on orders placed through these integrations. That, it added, marks a “meaningful distinction as commission structures on traditional delivery platforms continue to compress restaurant margins.”
How Square is enabling agentic commerce
Square said ChatGPT and Claude are the first live integrations, and there are more to come. In addition, Square said it is “working with Amazon to bring sellers into Alexa+ experiences, extending AI-powered discovery into voice commerce.”
Square said that for sellers, the integrations provide a way of “accessing customers without new complexity.”
These partnerships are part of a broader strategy, Square said. As new AI platforms and channels emerge, it seeks to give Square sellers visibility without having to manage each integration individually.
“Eligible sellers are opted in with no additional work, setup, or fees required,” Square said. “There is no API to build, no new tool to configure, and no added cost.”
It said sellers can manage their AI discoverability through their existing Square Dashboards. At the same time, Square handles the infrastructure layer. It said it syncs business information, menu data, hours of availability and ordering information in real time.
Square said it is actively participating in emerging agentic commerce protocol groups to help shape open standards for how AI agents and commerce platforms interact. Those groups include:
- AAIF Agentic Commerce Working Group
- W3C Web Payments Working Group
- Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), which Google and Shopify developed.
Partners Coffee uses Square to enable agentic commerce
Brooklyn-based specialty brand Partners Coffee has collaborated with Square on agentic commerce.
The companies said they worked to develop and refine experiences in AI platforms. In doing so, they received “real-world feedback” on how discovery on AI platforms helps to surface seller information.
Andrew Costaris, digital vice president at Partners Coffee, said the last thing the retailer wants is for technology to work against its mission or customer experience.
“With agentic commerce and AI tools working in the background, we’re confident knowing that our business is being digitally discovered and is consistently growing in efficiency, while our customers can continue to enjoy a lo-fi, specialty coffee-first environment,” Costaris said.
