Carina Rodrigues 21 September 2026 15:20 SHARE ARTICLE Facebook Twitter LinkedIn WhatsApp Telegram Email Copy link Temu has reached second place among the largest e-commerce retailers in Portugal, just three years after starting its expansion in Europe. The platform already holds one of the top two positions in 12 European markets and leads in four of them, according to ECDB's 2025 rankings . The Chinese platform's progress is not, however, uniform across the continent. ECDB concludes that the strength of local operators and the maturity of each market significantly influence the speed at which Temu manages to climb the rankings . Leader in four European markets Temu is already the largest online retailer in Finland, Croatia, Hungary, and Slovenia. According to the ECDB, these four countries share a relevant characteristic: none has a national marketplace with the scale of operators like bol in the Netherlands or Allegro in Poland, nor a local Amazon operation. Consumers in these markets were also already accustomed to buying from international platforms, reducing the competitive advantage of more established domestic operators. The combination of these factors facilitated Temu's rapid rise, which managed to reach first place just three years after entering the region. Portugal is part of a group of eight markets where Temu is number two. In addition to the four countries where it holds the leading position, Temu is in second place in Portugal, France, Norway, Bulgaria, Greece, Austria, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia. In total, this means the platform has managed to reach the top 2 in 12 European markets in a relatively short period. France stands out particularly in this group, as it is one of the largest e-commerce markets in Western Europe. According to ECDB, two elements help explain the progress: competitive prices and a wide variety of products. This combination allowed Temu to quickly gain scale even in geographies where it faces already established competitors. Larger markets exhibit greater resistance. The situation is different in the larger and more established European markets. In Germany, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Italy, and Spain, Temu remains outside the top two positions. ECDB attributes this difference to the existence of more developed competitive structures and strongly established retailers before the platform's arrival. Switzerland is presented as a clear example. The top two positions belong to local operators Galaxus and Digitech, and there are four more retailers between these leaders and Temu. In the United Kingdom and the Netherlands, domestic operators continue to hold leading positions, while Italy and Spain also have a strong Amazon presence. Nevertheless, Temu managed to enter the top 10 in all six markets, demonstrating that the platform has already acquired a significant size even where competition is most intense. Advertise with us!
