The Bao 5 - sold under the electric car giant's technology sub-brand Denza - has a boxy shape that very closely resembles that of the luxury off-roader sold by the British car firm. Using a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain producing over 500bhp, it can cover more than 50 miles in electric-only mode and - with a full tank of fuel and a 100 per cent charged battery - 537 miles without needing to stop. Priced from £70,000, it's around £6,000 pricier than the entry-level diesel Defender with five doors - the 110. But upgrade a Defender to a PHEV drivetrain and the Bao 5 comes in around £7,000 cheaper. Like the Land Rover, it should be pretty capable off-road too. That's because it has sixteen different driving modes to choose from for ultimate adaptability. Denza has clearly said that the Bao 5 is its 'entry ticket to the boxy SUV segment' and will rival the Defender Land Rover started the now extraordinarily popular trend of big, square, utilitarian and rugged 4x4s, and motorists can't get enough of it. The Defender is now by far Land Rover's best-selling product. Last year, it achieved record deliveries of more than 115,000 units - far outpacing other models like the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport. And Denza has chosen it as the ripest target for the Bao 5. It says the SUV will be an 'entry ticket to the segment', with the Bao 5 going 'for best in class' across all the key components of these kinds of cars. This includes off-road capabilities, intelligence, refinement and versatility. The strategy makes sense as Denza has pointed out that the UK represents more than half of European sales of boxy SUVs. ‹ Slide me › The Denza Bao 5's (left) boxy proportions are very much in the ilk of the popular Land Rover Defender (right) Read More Five clever car features that help you cope in a heatwave Impressive plug-in hybrid performance On paper, the Bao 5 sounds like it will be incredibly capable. The plug-in hybrid powertrain provides customers with a claimed 56 miles of pure-electric range (the same as the Jaecoo 7 SHS 'Temu Range Rover') and 537 miles on a full tank and a full charge. DC charging at 100kW speeds will refill the battery from 30 to 80 per cent in 16 minutes, and 11kW AC charging from 15 to 100 per cent takes just over three hours. The plug-in hybrid powertrain also delivers 537bhp - enough for an impressive 0-62mph time of just 5.4 seconds. Not bad for a hulking motor that weighs over three tonnes. With 16 different driving modes, you're unlikely to get stuck in the Bao 5. Its instrument control unit looks like it's been lifted straight out of a commercial jet SIXTEEN driving modes We've become accustomed to the latest 4x4s boasting various driving modes, with differential locks, off-roading assists and hill descent control all part of their suite of adjustable settings. But we can't think of many - if any - that have 16 individual driving modes, and certainly not modes called 'Leopard' or 'Race'. There's also a mode called 'U-turn', which takes control of the wheels and brakes to intelligently steer and turn the Bao 5 on flat roads, gravel roads or ice- and snow-covered roads for better manoeuvrability. The Bao 5 is Chinese tech meeting the countryside. The Bao 5 has four screens - a 12.3-inch driver display, a 15.6-inch infotainment screen, a wide head-up display and a passenger widescreen - which combine in an interlocking 'lock' shape Like the Land Rover Defender, it too has a side-hinged boot door. Its square aperture and the car's boxy proportions mean it should be a great load-lugger Comfort on tap You might be climbing a muddy hill in the Bao 5, but that doesn't mean you can't do it in comfort. That's because Denza has packed it full of technology and luxury features. The lock symbol, which has inspired the exterior and interior design of the Bao 5, is central to the Bao 5's multi-screen display setup. There are four screens in total — a 12.3-inch driver display, a 15.6-inch infotainment screen, a wide head-up display and a passenger widescreen — which combine in an interlocking 'lock' shape. It comes with Google Built-in, four-zone voice detection, which allows each occupant to interact personally with over 300 vehicle functions, an 18-speaker theatre audio system from French sound specialists Devialet, a panoramic sunroof, heated and ventilated front massage seats, and heated rear seats — and these are just a few features from a long specification list. Another great luxury feature, especially in this heat, is the 4.5-litre cooled and heated storage compartment. The compartment can hold up to eight cans and refrigerate them between -6°C and 15°C. It can also heat them to 35°C and 50°C. You can even set it via the Denza app. The gear selector and surrounding buttons in the centre console are impressive too; they're arranged like the controls of a commercial jet. The Bao 5 Elegance costs £69,500 and the Ultimate costs £78,880. Orders open this summer and deliveries begin in Q4 2026 Denza stores across Europe will begin taking orders during the summer, with the first deliveries expected to reach customers in the final quarter of 2026 How much will it cost and when can I get one? The Bao 5 comes in two trims: Elegance and Ultimate. Both are kitted out to the nines, but the Ultimate adds DiSus-P intelligent hydraulic suspension to the technical specification, increases the alloy wheel size to 20 inches and includes additional features such as ventilated rear seats, a digital rear-view mirror, an upgraded 18-speaker Devialet audio system and an extra wireless smartphone charging pad. Elegance costs £69,500 and the Ultimate costs £78,880. Denza stores across Europe will begin taking orders during the summer, with the first deliveries expected to reach customers in the final quarter of 2026.
