TikTok Cuts 75 Bellevue Jobs for the Second Year in a Row - Startup Fortune

TikTok is cutting 75 jobs at its Bellevue e-commerce hub, and the timing is the point: TikTok Shop is growing fast while the company trims the people who keep the marketplace clean. The new cuts hit Lincoln Square North at 700 Bellevue Way NE in downtown Bellevue, according to a WARN notice filed with Washington's Employment Security Department. TT Commerce and Global Services LLC, a TikTok affiliate, told the state that the layoffs take effect on October 19, 2026. Affected workers received at least 60 days' notice and can apply for other jobs inside the company before that date. That sounds orderly. It isn't small. The roles listed in the filing sit close to the machinery of TikTok Shop: anti-fraud and governance program managers, seller and creator operations staff, campaign managers, data scientists, backend engineers and frontend engineers. GeekWire reported that nearly all 75 cuts are tied to TikTok Shop and Global E-Commerce. Those aren't ornamental jobs. They are the people who deal with bad sellers, broken campaigns, product data and the less visible work between a viral video and a package arriving at your door. This is also the second year running. GeekWire reported in July 2025 that ByteDance and TikTok cut 65 Seattle-area jobs, split between 27 ByteDance employees and 38 TikTok employees, after building Bellevue into a base for TikTok Shop talent near Amazon. One layoff can be a reset. Two at the same office starts to look like a local strategy. TikTok Shuts Its Nashville Office Two Years After Signing the Lease TikTok is closing its Nashville office and laying off everyone who worked there, just two years after signing a 58,000-square-foot lease on Music Row. The closure comes even after ByteDance resolved its long U.S. ownership fight in January 2026, showing the cost-cutting hasn't eased. - TikTok closes Nashville Music Row office - TikTok layoffs after ownership settlement fight The growth story doesn't fit neatly with the cuts TikTok Shop is not a business in retreat. EMARKETER said on August 13 that TikTok Shop's US gross merchandise volume jumped 103% year over year to $11.8 billion in the first half of 2026, citing Momentum Works, and forecast US sales of $23.41 billion for the full year, up 48%. That is fast growth by any retail standard. Here's the thing: growth makes trust and safety work harder, not lighter. More sellers means more listings to police. More creators means more campaigns to approve, monitor and fix. More buyers means more disputes when a cheap product or a counterfeit item turns a quick purchase into a support problem. You don't have to be sentimental about headcount to see the tension. The company gave the state a dry reason. FOX 13 Seattle reported that TikTok called the Bellevue cuts necessary because of recent restructuring in its operations and said they were not tied to relocating or contracting out the affected work at the facility. That leaves the real question unanswered for workers and sellers: whether these jobs are disappearing for good, or being handed to systems that need fewer local people watching the marketplace. TikTok's US cuts are wider than Bellevue. TechCrunch reported on August 6 that TikTok is laying off 250 employees and shutting its Nashville office, which housed some content moderation workers. That office closes on October 5. Zanna Crowley, a spokesperson for the TikTok USDS Joint Venture, told TechCrunch the company was streamlining operations and aligning teams for long-term growth. There is the phrase again. Long-term growth sounds better than fewer people doing the work. New ownership raises the stakes The Bellevue filing lands seven months after TikTok's US restructuring became official. In a January 22 announcement, Silver Lake said TikTok USDS Joint Venture had been established with Oracle, Silver Lake and MGX as managing investors, each holding 15%, while ByteDance retained 19.9%. The Guardian reported the same day that the new venture was 80.1% owned by non-Chinese investors and would be led by Adam Presser. Presser's job is not just to keep TikTok growing. The joint venture was set up around US data security, algorithm safeguards, content moderation and software assurances. That is why these Bellevue cuts deserve more attention than a routine local WARN notice usually gets. When a marketplace is trying to prove it can operate cleanly under American oversight, thinning anti-fraud, governance and seller operations roles sends a mixed signal. TikTok Agrees to Pay DOJ $400 Million Over Children's Privacy Violations TikTok and ByteDance agreed to pay the Justice Department $400 million to resolve a lawsuit alleging the platform collected data from children under 13 without parental consent, one of the largest COPPA settlements ever recorded. Large platforms shift work all the time. They automate and reorganize, moving teams around until the org chart says what executives want it to say. But you should watch what happens after October 19. If seller support slows or counterfeit complaints rise, the Bellevue filing will look less like tidy restructuring and more like TikTok cutting into the part of Shop that makes growth usable.
