TikTok Shop Is Reshaping Beauty Commerce Through Creators, Content, and Community

Key Takeaways: Creator partnerships drive TikTok Shop growth more than branded content alone. High-volume content production is essential for gross merchandise value (GMV). TikTok increases demand across other commerce channels. "The State of TikTok Shop," presented at BeautyMatter 2026 State of Play by Kaumana Rindlisbacher, Director of Sales at Pattern, highlighted TikTok Shop as one of the most important retail channels in the US right now. It ranks as the fourth largest e-commerce retailer in health and beauty, behind only Amazon, Walmart, and Target, and it's scaling fast, cementing itself as much more than a social platform. The first half of 2026 revealed that brands cannot simply sell products on TikTok Shop; they must build an ecosystem of creators, generate content, and engage with the user community. Rindlisbacher warns that brands treating the platform like any other marketplace are at risk of falling behind. Investing in creator relationships and producing high volumes of content has proven to pay off. Rindlisbacher outlined the biggest takeaways from H1 2026. TikTok Owns Consumer Attention TikTok is all about grabbing consumers' attention and retaining it. In the US, it reaches approximately 207 million monthly active users, who spend an average of 1.6 hours per day on the app. It has become the country's top entertainment platform, surpassing Netflix, YouTube, and Spotify, and continues to grow at roughly 84% year over year. Users open the app roughly 21 times daily, which captures attention in short viewing sessions. With one billion daily video views, that constant engagement gives brands the opportunity to "get in front of the vast majority of the population," according to Rindlisbacher, reaching users in moments of discovery rather than when they're actively searching for products. In other words, TikTok creates consumer demand before users even realize they are shopping while scrolling. According to Pattern, TikTok is expected to reach $1 trillion in global social commerce sales by 2028. Content Volume Is Paramount TikTok requires an intense volume of content. Among the top beauty brands on the platform, the largest shops generated hundreds of thousands of videos in a single month. From mid-April to mid-May, Medicube, the top beauty shop, based on gross merchandise value (GMV), published nearly 125,000 videos and more than 27,000 livestreams, generating $20 million in a 30-day period. Across the top 10 shops, the average exceeded 40,000 videos and 10,000 livestreams during the same span of time. Rindlisbacher asserts that established brands cannot rely on strong brand recognition on TikTok to compensate for producing less content. The brands achieving the highest sales are doing so by leveraging creators to produce content at scale. The top 10 brands include Medicube, Dr. Melaxin, Tarte, Based, Color Wow, Hismile, BellaVita, Bare Anatomy, Beauty House, and Truly. Affiliates Drive the Majority of Sales Brands are relying on affiliates to generate an overwhelming share of revenue. For eight of the top 10 brands, more than 90% of GMV came from creator-driven content rather than the brands' own channels. The data suggests that very little GMV is earned through the search experience, such as TikTok’s Shop tab. In this sense, it is important for brands to allow creators to sell products authentically to their own audiences, shifting the brand's role from producing content to building an ecosystem that enables others to create it. "It's still surprising that we will see mostly large brands with legacy and deep brand cachet that think that they don't need this kind of volume to be a top shop," said Rindlisbacher. "The data is pretty conclusive. You have to drive significant content volume across an army—just vast amounts of affiliates—to reach these upper echelons."
